The files for the game are all in a downloadable ZIP folder. When you buy it, a link to this will appear onscreen and we will email it to you also. The email usually arrives within an hour or so but please check spam/junk or contact us c/o mmgames[insert @ here]mayhem.org.uk if it doesn’t. You must download the game within 24 hours of purchase else the link will no longer work (you can still play the game afterwards).

A modern masterpiece is being auctioned off by its owner
Everyone attending is either an art collector keen to bid in the auction, a key character in the plot or a crime-solving observer. A valuable work of modern art is about to be sold to the highest bidder when a tragic death occurs…
The game can be played virtually via video chatting and conferencing (Zoom, Facetime, Houseparty, etc.) or by a group all gathered in the same space. It usually lasts around 90 minutes and is best for groups of 8 - 14 people. 8-13 people play characters (sometimes sharing the same character) and 1 person runs the game. If there are more than 14 of you or some guests don't want to play characters, the extra people can observe and accuse at the end instead. We know from what people tell us that those observing still find plenty to amuse and entertain them.
Most of Murder in the Red Room is scripted but we’ve still left some room for people to make things up/improvise. It has plenty of surprises along the way and an interesting mystery to solve at the end.
How long before I can start playing?
Downloading the game usually happens within minutes but can sometimes take longer, depending on your connection. We have a Minimum Preparation version for those who want to get started as soon as possible and a Full Preparation version for those who have more time to prepare. Even with the quick version, you should still allow at least 15 minutes to get everything ready.
To avoid any technical mishaps with the video chat platform you are using, the more time you give yourself to prepare, the smoother the game will run. If you can, buy the game at least 24 hours ahead of when you plan to play. Murder in the Red Room has a lot more going on in it than happens at a quiz night!
Age Rating/Content Rating
The content in Murder in the Red Room isn’t particularly crude or smutty although it contains some references to extra-marital affairs. It involves a fair amount of listening and observing as well as joining in. For this reason, we don’t think it’s suitable for younger children and suggest an age limit of aged 12 or older for it.
Hire an actor
You can run this game yourself but if you’d like one or two professional actors to run your game virtually for you, please contact us c/o mmgames[insert @ here]mayhem.org.uk
You will still need to be in charge of all the technical side of how the game is run. But you will have someone experienced playing the big lead role and helping to keep the script on track. We’re based in the UK so this option won’t be available in every time zone. The price will vary according to how many of you there are and how long we are needed for. Expect to pay around £300-£350 per actor in the UK for groups up to 25 people, around $450 in the US and elsewhere. For bigger groups, the prices are higher.
